Educational Trainings
APAC offers opportunities for families and professionals to increase their
knowledge of adoption-related subjects. Educational Training services are
available to all adoptive families, all foster families, all professionals
serving adoptive families, kinship care families, and DHR waiting families.

Current Training Topics
- All About Adoption - provides answers to questions about the adoption
process including who can adopt, the types of adoption, searching for birth
family information, and other issues that are a part of the adoption process.
- Grief, Loss, and Attachment - offers an overview for the adoptive and foster
care communities that addresses each stage of grief and the practical ways to
work with children through these stages.
- Lifebooks - provides information about the importance of lifebooks for
adopted and foster children, describes the process of working on a lifebook with
a child, and provides a blueprint to work from in completing the various pages
of a lifebook.
- Adopted and Foster Children in the Schools - a three-part
training that targets the three populations in the school system:
parents, school administrators and school counselors, and teachers.
The parents' section offers practical techniques for understanding and
navigating the school system, including information about special education
and IEPs. The school administrator and counselor section emphasizes
the importance of integrating adoption awareness and education within the
school system, and the teachers' section offers a practical toolkit for
sensitive issues regarding adoption and foster care in the classroom
- Let's Talk About It - provides practical strategies for
talking to your child, family, and community about foster care and adoption.
This training also addresses developmental stages and the way to communicate
during each stage.
- Listening to and Learning from Adult Adoptees - offers
practical advice and information for adoptive parents and professionals
working with adopted children. This training includes video vignettes
of adult adoptees who share their stories and insights into the adoptive
experience.
- Stress Management - provides insight into the daily
stressors we all encounter, including secondary stress which often comes to
those who are helping others. This training offers concrete
suggestions for time management and relaxation in order to regulate our
responses to stress.
- Family Connections - provides strategies on how to
promoting family connectedness within adoptive and foster families.
Family meetings, communication skills, negotiating conflicts, and quality
time activities are among the topics discussed in this training.
- Transracial Adoption and Foster Care - provides discussion
of the many issues involved with transracial placement, along with concrete
parenting tasks specific to transracial adoption and foster care. When
conducted for professionals, this workshop gives practical tools for
assessing a family for transracial placement.
